I am sure you must have heard about ATM fraud incident which happened with National Bank of Pakistan last month. Yesterday I came across a letter to editor in Dawn in which a woman discussed about mis use of her credit card at a petrol pump in Faisalabad. I wrote a little blog on it including ATM so here it is:

Yes never use your card offline. I only use CC online at respectable sites like GoDaddy, 2CO, DomainSite and never had any problem. Using CC online is safer than offline if website is not fishy I guess.

Using Google Checkout can help minimize risk of misuse I've heard... has anyone ever used it?

Plus you can also ask bank to block card on internet. Like one of my friend has Bank Alfalah card and when ever he wants to use it online he calls bank and asks them to unblock the card for say 10 minutes to make purchase of $50 e.t.c
This way his card is only unblocked for that specific time and cannot purchase more than he told them. After 10 minutes the card will automatically get blocked.

The Faisalabad incident was not internet fraud as I understood from the woman's letter posted on @Techman's blog. It was used to purchase fuel on a petrol pump in Faisalabad. That could not be done without swiping a card!
This seems to be something more sinister than internet fraud as it seems the hacker was able to copy the data off the UBL credit card of the lady, use that to encode a fake card and used that at faisalabad petrol pump.
The data must have been copied by shopkeepers when the original card got swiped and the data captured on a pc/notebook.
Seems like we need to watch carefully where our cards are getting swiped by shopkeeprs.

I have been a CC user for almost 8 years now and recently I have stopped using any kind of CC off line except for shops like HKB or restaurants. I am a frequent user of CC online but using it in Pakistan, even online is a nightmare.
Also the banks are just a bunch of losers having no customer service at all. If you have reported a bad transaction, they will not refund it.

Identity theft and fraud are serious issues plaguing the world. Thieves are finding newer and more efficient ways to conduct the low-risk, high-reward crime of identity theft. With the staggering numbers of thefts occurring every year, people are having difficult understanding just how a thief finds their information and how they can stay protected against the evils of identity theft.

At sites like godaddy you don't even need the cvc number (3 digits at the back of the card).
Regarding UBL, if you want to use their wiz card online you have send an internet application form. But sending it via email is insecure

My colleague suffered with this kind of hack, he use to charge his credit card for petrol. During charge card had been copied and used later by the petrol pump staff, but the bank had refund (crdited) the drawn amount after verification.
Oh but he had to pay Rs. 500/- for new Credit card also. ![]()
