Re: Micronet/Nayatel DSL/FTTH news + queries + problems + solutions

Well - PTCL's front-end CSRs aren't equipped to handle customer complaints adequately. As far as the speed issue is concerned, you'll generally find a constant 100+ on 1m links.

But be warned - they recently started throttling bittorrent traffic. Most of their CSRs deny, but one confirmed that they do alter bittorrent traffic (which, in other words, means traffic shaping).

Re: Micronet/Nayatel DSL/FTTH news + queries + problems + solutions

Still can't figure out whats wrong with the otherwise good voice quality on MBL.
While the other party can hear me very well, all I get to hear is choppy, scratchy voice with echo.I have tried different VOIPs,it doesn't improve.
Anyone else experiencing the same on MBL?

Roxio, have you calibrated the microphone and all? You might have to enable "echo cancellation" or "noise cancellation" in your PC. Not all sound cards support it.

And you might want to reduce the sensitivity of the microphone as well, just in case.

Re: Micronet/Nayatel DSL/FTTH news + queries + problems + solutions

Shaheerk,
I have tried everything, reformatted my machine, checked  it on a different PC,its the same.
MBL techies have so far been unable to figure out the cause. One tech support staff has suggested I switch from dynamic to static IP and he is confident this should solve the problem. But doing that would take me from unlimited to limited download of 7GB.
I might try doing that tomorrow, lets see.
Has anyone of you(with static IP) experienced the same problem?
Pls share.

Roxio, does your router support QoS? If so, assign VoIP traffic higher priority.

I tried to find QoS in my router settings.Don't see it there.
Thanks.

Re: Micronet/Nayatel DSL/FTTH news + queries + problems + solutions

I don't see how switching to a static IP would make the problem go away. From what I've seen, a number of MBL's IP addresses have been blacklisted from spam servers around the world, and one of the techies says that's the reason why I get slow downs in the evenings... which, we all know, has no bearing on the internet speed.

And another tech support said the same (i.e. it has no bearing).

I'd try what Asad suggested - fiddle w/ the QoS settings. I don't know exactly how to set them and all, so if anyone could enlighten us, then it'd be great.

Oh - and Roxio, one more shot: can you try calling the Skype call testing service, and via Skype, 1-800-free411 or goog411? You can dial American lines tollfree via Skype.

Point being - if they're fine, maybe it's the other party that has issues.

I mainly use MagicJack to make or receive calls but I have tried other web based phone services, the incoming call quality is really bad while the other party can always hear me fine. This is the problem.

Skype's test calls which is usually crystal clear even on slower speeds sounds bad.Even the dial tone is choppy.

The thing is,I am here on visit and I have to make important phone calls to US.There is no point in calling when you can't hear the other party too well.

Don't know why MBL techies have no clue why this is happening.

Those blacklists are for mail servers. They shouldn't affect VoIP.

Roxio, QoS is called Bandwidth management in some routers.

My question remains unanswered;
Is anyone of you facing the same problem i.e poor voice quality on VoIP?

Re: Micronet/Nayatel DSL/FTTH news + queries + problems + solutions

I have been testing the voice quality every day for the last one week,it continues to be poor.

I have a week left for the current billing cycle to end.I may very well say bye to MBL and look for an alternative.
Any ideas,pls.
Thanks.

Re: Micronet/Nayatel DSL/FTTH news + queries + problems + solutions

The last time I used Skype, my VOIP was fine. I haven't tested it now, but I'm guessing it should be fine.

I just paid 3 months in advance to Micronet... and I don't have another alternative in my area (cause PTCL isn't an option, and the rest are either too expensive, or capped)

Re: Micronet/Nayatel DSL/FTTH news + queries + problems + solutions

Shaheerk,
As from yesterday I have switched to dsl@home 7 with static IP and the voice problem seems to have gone away and it looks crisp and clear,no more distortions and echoes.

So it seems the problem lay with dynamic IP i.e blacklisted modems.
Obviously the downside is that total downloads are capped at 7GB,Whether that is enough or insufficient, remains to be seen.

Thanks for your support and suggestions.

Re: Micronet/Nayatel DSL/FTTH news + queries + problems + solutions

Roxio, I tested Skype today, and surely, I was getting ALOT of distortion too! I'll try again later, when my sister isn't using the net... but I know the IP addresses MBL has (or atleast something related it) affect your speed (here's one case: I was on 70KB/s, reconnected and went to 80, and after reconnecting again it jumped to 90, then back to 80).

Call me crazy or whatever, but something is majorly wrong. And to top it off, I discovered this WHILE chatting w/ MBR's CSR.

Re: Micronet/Nayatel DSL/FTTH news + queries + problems + solutions

This is quite a nuisance and MBL techies have not come up with a plausible reason.
This brings back memories of old days when dialup connections had poor voice quality but with a dsl connection it is simply not acceptable.

Re: Micronet/Nayatel DSL/FTTH news + queries + problems + solutions

I am a little confused as to what really constitutes "monthly download limit"?
Do all the pages that we visit included in the download?

^ Yes. Any and all traffic (upload/download) counts in the bandwidth consumption figure.

Micronet 1MB connection at Chaklala-3,Rawalpindi

Sadly my family is facing the same issue since early this month. The UL/DL speed (+ping) is fine, but the VoIP quality is pretty *cheap* at their end. MBL techies told my brother that your connection is fine at our end+PTCL is blocking VoIP service (which i believe is a lame excuse).

Re: Micronet/Nayatel DSL/FTTH news + queries + problems + solutions

Poor, choppy voice on a DSL connection is not acceptable.....All of you who are facing this problem, should launch complaints with MBL.It is their problem and they need to sort it out before they start losing customers.

And "PTCL is not allowing"is a lame excuse but if other broadband companies do not have the problem then this is MBL's internal issue.
