First of all, this is totally unofficial so please don't ask for any legit source.
I know someone who works at Mobilink and he has told me that Mobilink's Wimax is going to see its soft launch in Karachi next week. Now, I am not sure how "soft" this soft launch is going to be but apparently, they are going to focus on corporate sector rather than home users. He also told me that things in Mobilink are pathetic. They are not investing and the Arab investors are actually being misers investing more in Pakistan. He has given me a lot of insights of Telecom industry and how it apparently seems to be flourishing on the outside but is actually collapsing inside.
Apparently, the good thing about Mobilink's Wimax is that they have got all of the Karachi covered. What he told me is that with Wateen you have to ask about service availablity but Mobilink has covered even areas like Lyari where you can't expect many connections. So that's something to look forward too.
He told me something that's not a secret and that is the launch of 3G expected this year. He said that the government will allow 3G to be used here in Pakistan. What he said is that if the government was planning to launch 3G then there was no use of having Wimax because it (wimax) works more like 2.5g (I guess he meant hypothetically). So basically, what he was trying to say that if 3G was being introduces, there was no use of all these Telecom giants investing millions in technologies like Wimax/Edge etc.
Now, this is the scope I got from him. I invite all of you to share your opinion regarding the info I have shared with you guys.
I am not at all a Mobilink fan. But only to see that Wateen will FINALLY see a competition sounds good. I hope to see wireless technology, be it 3G, WiMax, Edge or any other service that could provide broadband over a wireless connection grow in Pakistan. Our copper infrastructure is almost old enough to be called Before Christ and costs us a hell lot more than a Wireless connection would. This is badly needed!
Thanks,
z

the initial packages don't sound as good as one would hope. here's the detail:
6000 initial cost with 2200 refundable
1200 for 1mbps
the quality is so far so good. which in other words could be translated as "syncs quickly and gives regular bandwidth"
but the most important thing is it's FINALLY UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH.
the pricing structure is aimed to be revised in October 2008.
alright, here's the bomb:
Through Mobilink WiMax, you can make FREE voice calls to Mobilink GSM and Mobilink Inifnity (that's the brand name of Wimax)
CPE standard cost is 12k however it would be 6k for all those who signup before Sep 08.
And let me remind you again, the data download/upload bandwidth is Unlimited.
i called the helpline
the package cot is 799 per month for 256 kbit and also he told me its only in karachi
and also the package is unlimited till 31st of this month after that they will not be how much the limit is he did not specify
Mobilink Wimax Tarrif

although am a satisfied linkdotnet's customer but at Rs 6000 for CPE and rs 1200 for 1 mb this looks attractive.. but will wait for some users first hand reviews
and technically now this is cheapest 1 mb offer excluding the ptcl HEC offer(which i don't qualify for ) so does any one foresee further downward revision of tariff from ptcl/link and others?

i am just wondering one thing, linkdotnet is also an orascom telecom's company, so it mobilink, so for wired/dsl they're offering connection from Linknet while for wireless they're offering connection from mobilink.. both subsidiaries competing each other ..

i am just wondering one thing, linkdotnet is also an orascom telecom's company, so it mobilink, so for wired/dsl they're offering connection from Linknet while for wireless they're offering connection from mobilink.. both subsidiaries competing each other ..
